I RUV WRUV

Sometimes it surprises me to find out how few people actually know about WRUV - my home away from home, the splendor of my grass...my everything. WRUV is the 'student voice' of the University of Vermont. We've been spinning the freshest tracks since 1955, that's right folks, 1955. We're a non-profit, educational radio station open to students and community members. This past Sunday (right before the Thurston show) we held a DJ training meeting in the Davis Center. Tons of little freshman, er, first-year, music dweeblets flooded the Mansfield room in hopes of learning more about how to become a DJ. We hold these sessions at the beginning of every semester and also in the summer, which is a great time to do DJ training because we have a six week graveyard process.

The graveyard process is exactly what it sounds like - you get one of the best time slots in town - 2-4 am or 4-6 am! In the MORNING. I remember doing my graveyard shift my freshman year at UVM, and let me tell you it was more or less painful. I had a 2-4am slot on Tuesday nights, or Wednesday mornings to be exact, and I had to shlep myself all the way from Trinity to the Davis Center. Luckily, I lived in McAuley, otherwise known for the Mayhem that ensued, which actually turned out to be a great thing because there were tons of drunken idiots roaming around outside at 2 in the morning – I kid you not.

All tangents aside, these training sessions are a really awesome way to get involved and to see if being a DJ at WRUV is something you might be interested in. They're open to the public which is entirely unique to organization, because anyone can 'audition' to become a DJ. As a DJ, you also get to meet and interact with people you wouldn't normally get the chance to on a regular basis. Some WRUV DJs are like...60 years old, and that's pretty much ancient. I've found it to be a truly enriching experience, and one of the best decisions I've made as a student at UVM.

If you aren't exactly down for being a DJ yourself, there are still other ways to support WRUV. If you're ever wondering what's playing as you walk through the tunnel in the Davis Center, call us! Or check online to see what awesome track we just played. We also put on a ton of events throughout the year and team up with MSR and Angioplasty to put on some bigger-name shows. Give WRUV a chance - check out our schedule online and find a show that's right for you! I promise we have a show that caters to your musical needs – metal, folk, hip hop, rpm, rock, jazz, blues, classical, even some dubstep nonsense for your bass-fiends out there.

Shameless self-promotion time!

  1. Yeah WRUV is da shit. I had a couple friends who DJed in the past, one being Keith Oliver aka DJ KO I duno if you knew him, another being my friend who passed away a couple years back. He had the graveyard shift, 2-4 am like you were saying and a bunch of us went to the station for a 2am tribute show shortly after he passed. RIP Parlo, everyone who knew you loved you.
